Day 39, Tuesday, August 15, 2006

50 this morning in Seward and it rained all night and still coming down. A little depressing. We passed up a hike to the Exit Glacier yesterday on the drive into town, hoping for better weather today. Not! But we will do the hike anyway when we leave here – very soon. Going to go inland and try to get away from this weather.
There is an annual Silver Salmon fishing contest going on here this week and it is very crowded with fishermen. It’s a big sports fishing and cruise center most of the summer, but this week is especially busy. Parking lots and R.V. lots are jammed “to the gills”, but we don’t see many people around. They must be out fishing or “holed” up in their R.V.’s like us. I’ll never complain about the weather in Elkhart again!
We walked to the harbor end of town and to our suprise it was very clean. Checked on a Fijords Tour and got a fresh Halibut lunch.
Drove to the Kenai Fjords National Park to view the Exit Glacier. We got to hike to the face of it. Right up to it! Blue ice big time! It's shrinking 50 feet every year and have signs showing the retreat. Interesting to see what was actually under a glacier a few years back. The short road to view the glacier is the only road in the entire National Park so we drove on.
Needed internet access and laundry so drove to the Kenai Princess Lodge R.V. park in Coopers Landing for the night. Not a great R.V. park but full lodge access. Pay-for internet access and hope it will do pictures. We will upload the “verbage"tonight and try to add pictures tomorrow.
