Day 31, Monday, August 7, 2006

48 this morning. Drove out of Teklanika early today anxious to get on the way. We plan a lot of things but change them constantly. We were going to do a short 2-3 hour hike on our way out of the park, but ran into a backpacking couple who flagged us down. They had boarded their dog with a stranger the night before going into the backcontry and had become stressed over the idea he might not be well taken care of. So we picked them up and drove them all the way down to the park visitor center to get their car and then their dog - forgoing our hike. Oh well?? Searched the area for a decent RV park to get a good shower, electricity, wi-fi access, groceries, dinner, etc. Made several stops and were not happy. We drove on south knowing, from what we have heard, that Denali State Park had better views of Denali than the national park itself. We were not disappointed! Unbelieveable views on the drive south towards Anchorage. WE SAW DENALI TODAY! We found a camp ground in the state park with a view too fantastic to put in words. Had to continue south, however, because no potable water available there and we needed a grocery store and internet access. So we are in Trapper Creek at an R.V. park with electricity, water, wi-fi, hot showers, laundry, and a little more ( but not much). You can't imagine the camping conditions here in Alaska unless you come up and see for yourself. Rocks, mud, dirt, and dust everywhere. And the lack of groceries. People up here say they drive 100+ miles to Fairbanks or Anchorage to go grocery shopping. Mostly gas station "stuff" along the highway. Lots of liquor stores, however. It is just a different way of life up here. Tomorrow we are dirving back north about 60 miles to stay at the Deanli View North campground in the Denali State Park. It's a full frontal, in-your-face, view of McKinley right from your door step. Well worth the 60 miles of backtracking. We just needed to find water, food, firewood and internet before camping there. Still not a completely clear view of McKinley today, but a much improved one. Weather clearing tonight and maybe a clear view tomorrow. The weather really got clearer and warmer upon driving south. We are told the South side of Denali always has better weather than the North, therefore the better chance and clearer view of the mountain. I was able to fix the problem of not going to the beginning of our blog and read it all. Just look at the ARCHIVES on the left of the screen and click on any day of our trip to review. It's 11:30 pm, still a little light outside, I'm going to bed.
