Day 38, Monday, August 14, 2006
55 this morning in the Williwaw Campground in the Chugach National Forest. And guess what – it’s still raining! A few drab pictures taken and will post as soon as we reach wi-fi.
Drove 100 miles to Seward today to have a look around. As just mentioned, it’s raining and not too much to see along the way. This is a spectacular scenic drive (we are told) but have the misfortune to drive through in the middle of the monsoon season.
The drive here was on good roads, except right in Seward where it is all tore up. All new pavement from about 8 miles out up to the city limits, then a real mess in the city. We were going to stay 6 miles outside the city in an R.V. park with wi-fi but then we could not “explore” Seward on foot. Opted for a city owned R.V. parking lot right on the Gulf of Alaska. It’s wet, it’s muddy, but it has water and electricity and a dump station nearby.
Rain is heavier around 4:00pm but we walked into town to see the Alaska SeaLife Center. In Alaska, if you let the rain stop you, you won’t go anywhere. The exhibit was just so-so and we didn’t spend too much time there. Walked into the center of the downtown district and found a clean looking restaurant. Had pretty good fresh salmon and halibut. Back to the motor home for a ripping game of Scrabble. Ellen won.
