Day 22, Saturday, July 29, 2006
55 this morning - not too bad. Clear weather, sunny and warm, continued the whole day. Isabelle still sick so went to vet at noon. Probably got an intestinal bug drinking lake/stream water or eating some garbage. $150.00 got us on the road with examination, medicine and special food. She was better almost right away and finally ate dinner after 2-1/2 days of nothing. Leaving Whitehorse, we were going to cross into Alaska today, but found Kluane Lake along the way too beautiful to pass by quickly. Found Cottonwood Campground right on the lake - right on the lake! - and had a great late afternoon of sun, snow capped mountains, beautiful clear blue water, and short walks. Kluane Lake is the largest in Canada and home of the largest concentration of grizzly bears in North America. Others in the campground reported seeing them but we did not. We ran into our first Major Road Repair today going along the lake, but unlike the horrible experience we were told it would be, found it to be just a little bumpy and dusty but not bad at all - about a 10 mile section of gravel. The whole Alaska Highway has been in decent shape except for occasional bumps, and short road-under-repair sections. Only 164 miles today.
