44 this morning in Cantwell CG just south of Denali. Left at noon to drive back to Denali National Park and select our reserved two day camp site. Picked our spot and headed out to get a McKinley view. Mostly cloudy this afternoon and therefore not a good time to see the mountain. Auto traffic is only allowed 15 miles into the park then must turn around and go back. Further access into the interior is for shuttle busses only and requires the purchase of a daily pass ($33.00) to get on board. They will take you about 90 miles in if you want to go that far, most get off at Wonder Lake, about 85 miles in for the best McKinley viewing. It’s only 85 miles but it is a 10 to 11 hour roundtrip even if you don’t get off the bus to hike.. Add the hiking and picturing taking and it’s all of a day to go in and back out. We are saving our bus trips into the interior for when we get our 3-day camping permit to go past the 15 mile limit and drive 30 miles into the park to camp at Teklanika CG. Only 53 vehicles get to be there at a time and the minimum stay is 3 days. We can get the bus at our campground and shave about 2 ½ hours off the trip to Wonder Lake because we are already 1/3 the way there. And, our single purchase bus ticket is good for all three days while at Teklanika CG. So today is a get acquainted with the area day and we’ll explore the interior from our next campsite on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We did drive the 15 mile limit today and at mile marker 11 got a limited view of Mt. McKinley. Not much to see with all the clouds around it, but for a first time look it was still unbelievable! How magnificent!!! It’s almost a religious experience to see such a big, big chuck of this earth so high up in the sky. Can’t wait for a clear view. After getting back to camp we turned around and went back for another look. About the same view. Some information is sure to be repeated alot. Excuse me, I just forget what I said from one day to the next. Miscellaneous 91 miles of driving today.
