Day 60, Tuesday, September 5, 2006

52 this morning in Skagway and overcast. Rained on and off all night but not right now.

We left today. Jim is getting anxious to head home. So nothing to report of interest today. Walked the dogs to a "Gold Rush" cemetary to see where the town founders were buried before we drove 300 miles to Watson Lake, Yk for the night. The skys turned mostly sunny for the drive once we got away from Skagway and the coastal dampness. What a nice change!

The clear weather gave us the opportunity to see scenery we did not see on the way up north. 250 miles of the trip today was backtracking on the ALCAN. This section was dark and rainy on our way up. It's really beautiful country. Anyway, we start the Cassiar Highway tomorrow. It's a mostly paved 450 mile road directly south. We leave the ALCAN here at about it's midpoint and will not return to it. Next stop is half way down the Cassiar on Wednesday and then into Hyder, Ak on Thursday hoping the bears are still there. People who have driven this "rough" road south and then the side trip to Hyder say it is the most beautiful of all Canada and Alaska. Hope it's true. Heading home there is a tendency to think there is nothing left to see or do, but except for the 250 miles on the ALCAN today, we will see all new country all the way home as we will not retrace our tacks.

There is hardly anyone on the roads this time of year. The season for travelers is really over. We were one of only 5 campers here at this 60+ site RVpark. It was strange to drive so far today and see so few people.
