Day 40, Wednesday, August 16, 2006
52 this morning in Cooper Landing. Guess what, it rained all night!
The internet connection is not provided by the lodge and due to excessive usage it crashed last night and is not available today. No pictures to upload today.
Our intention was to spend two nights here and take full advantage of the Princess Lodge, but without the internet access (I really have to pay some bills), and with the weather still so wet we decided to try to drive "out of the rain" having heard it was sunny further south around Homer. We didn't get very far. Plans keep changing. Decided to save the drive for a trip with Kathy and Bruce - they are coming to visit us on Saturday. Stopped at a National Forest campground to hike one of their trails three miles into the park to view salmon jumping a series of falls in thier attempt to get upstream to spwan. It was well worth the trip. It's amazing how strong the instinct for the salmon is to get back to where they were born. Two bears were at the rivers edge just minutes before we got there. We stayed awhile hoping they would return, but we finally left without seeing them. It spitted rain all afternoon.
We drove about 30 miles further west to Sterling. Getting out of the mountains seemed to get us away from the rain for awhile. Found a campground with high speed internet, cable t.v., laundry, no rain, and morning espresso. We're happy! But it did rain later in the night.
It got to about 62 today. Gas was $3.48.
