Day 51, Sunday, August 27, 2006
48 this morning in Anchorage. No rain to report! Partly cloudy. We're packing up and going to Valdez. Didn't make it to Valdez today. The drive on the Glenn Highway was too beautiful to just keep going. The weather held up with only clouds around the mountain tops. We stopped a lot at scenic pullouts so didn't get too far. We saw on the map a State Recreation Area - Lake Louise - 20 miles off the road and decided to check it out. We were the only ones there when we pulled in and only one more rig pulled in for the night. The dogs could run loose and got to swim in the lake. We were right on the lake shore with amazing views of the Alaska Range across the lake in the distance. We could not get confirmation that one of the mountains in view was McKinley but we think it was. Spectacular sights in any event. We walked a trail by the lake, cooked salmon, built a fire, enjoyed the quiet. No hook-ups so no tv, internet, or anything else to detract from the scenery.
A bald eagle came to visit while at Lake Louise, but Gracie barked at it and it flew away
View of Lake Louise from our campsite with the Alaska Range barely visable in the background
